Lothian and Borders Police have arrested two men, aged 28 and 27, charged with alleged drugs offences following a police investigation.
The force confirmed that one of the accused has been serving as uniformed police officer. The policeman has now been suspended.
Ian Livingstone, assistant Chief constable of Lothian and Borders police said “The force will make every effort to bring to justice all those involved in the illegal use of drugs, and we are committed to tackling this problem, wherever it may arise.
While we cannot comment on the individual circumstances of this case, public confidence in the integrity of the police service is paramount, and we will take all steps required to maintain that confidence.”
After further rumours regarding the involvement of other officers surfaced, immediate action was taken by the force, with a further six officers suspended from duty. A spokesperson said: “As part of an ongoing investigation, five uniformed officers and one detective officer have been asked not to report for duty until such a time as witness statements have been noted from them. It must be stressed that none of these officers are in any way suspected of criminality,” said a spokesman of the Force.
Two men have subsequently appeared at Haddington Sheriff Court.
