Edinburgh professor to advise Scottish government

Professor Ian Underwood to assist Scottish government on scientific, business and academic matters

University of Edinburgh professor, Ian Underwood has taken up a prestigious position as an advisor to the Scottish Government.

He is currently the Professor of electrical displays at Edinburgh and is to join the Scottish Science Advisory Council (SSAC).

Professor Underwood is also the co-founder of the technology company MicroEmissive displays, leaving him well placed to offer advice on both business and academic matters.

Education Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "Science plays an important role in supporting and sustaining Scotland's economic growth, underpinning business innovation and development.

"In these times of global financial uncertainties we need to ensure that we take full advantage of the huge potential that scientific knowledge and expertise offers.

"I am pleased to welcome Professor Underwood to the SSAC – with his strong and successful track record in business, I am sure he will provide valuable additional expertise to the council."

Professor Anne Glover, chief scientific adviser for Scotland and co-chairwoman of the SSAC, added: "Professor Underwood brings a wealth of experience to the council. I am delighted that he has agreed to join the SSAC."
