What do the following have in common: Russell T Davies, Sir Trevor MacDonald and Graham Norton? Perhaps not much. But what connects all three is their participation in "The Network" scheme, part of the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival (MGEITF).

Now in its 18th year, applications have now been opened to individuals over the age of eighteen aiming familiarise themselves with the TV industry and make that crucial "break". The scheme, say organisers, should help provide young people with the opportunity to get a head start in the television world. The scheme is an entirely event, with costs covered by sponsor. Organisers are advising anyone with an interest to sign-up in order to win a place out of a total of 150 chosen delegates. Those selected will be accommodated in Edinburgh’s George Hotel with master classes held at locations around the city.

The 5-day seeks to provide delegates with an insight into the many aspects of television production, such as how the cameras operate, the production process and directing. There is also the chance to meet the biggest TV hosts and presenters involved in TV, such as the likes of Channel 4’s news presenter, Jon Snow and Sharon Osborne, of X-Factor fame. Organisers say that the scheme helps develop those crucial networks and contacts with top TV Executives.

Speaking about the scheme, Sharon Osbourne said: “I think The Network is really important so young people can see how there are ways to get into the TV industry, because so many…don’t quite know how to get a break or what area they really want to work in.”

At the close of the programme, 150 candidates will be offered the chance to participate in further 6 month paid intern placements.

Applications are now open and the closing date is the 17th April 2009. Application forms can be found online via the MGEITF website www.mgeitf.co.uk/thenetwork.
