Only a few more weeks left to pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training, and we can start looking for to the upcoming baseball season. While the players may have been off, the general managers have been busy signing free agents and making some noteworthy trades. The biggest one being the Toronto Blue Jays trading their ace Roy Halliday to the Philadelphia Phillies, who then turned around and traded their ace Cliff Lee to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for some prospects. Matt Holiday decided to resign with the St Louis Cardinals, while Jason Bay decided to play for the New York Mets instead of resigning with the Boston Red Sox.
The defending world champions New York Yankees have kept up with everyone else this offseaon. They traded for Javier Vasquez of the Atlanta Braves and also traded for Curtis Ganderson of the Detriot Tigers. They let Johnny Damon go as a free agent and replaced him Randy Winn formally or the San Francisco Giants. With an improved pitching staff and an upgrade with left and center field defensively, the Yankees should be able to make the playoffs again, if not the World Series.
The Seattle Mariners were the biggest players this off season. With more than 50 million dollars coming off the payroll, they were able to upgrade their pitching, by adding Clif Lee, giving them the most fearsome one two punch with Felix Hernandez. They signed Chone Figgins away from the Anaheim Angels to play third base, and was able to trade Carlos Silva to the Chicago Cubs for Milton Bradley, and acquire first baseman Casey Kotchman from the Red Sox while only giving up Bill Hall in return. Franklin Gutierrez signed a 4 year extention, and Ken Griffey Jr decided to come back for one more season. The Mariners now have by far the best defense in all of baseball with 4 Gold Glove winners in their starting line up and another on the bench. All these improvements should add up to a division title for the Mariners, and if they make it that far their pitching and defense will make them a team to reckon with in the playoffs. This could be the year they go all the way to the World Series.
