Several students could be unable to finish their degrees next year due to cuts at the University of Edinburgh, The Journal understands.
Religious Studies students discovered that the Hinduism course, forming part of year 3, might be discontinued in the next academic year.
The threat of cancellation follows the resignation of two members of staff and the University’s decision not to replace them.
The information was passed on to The Journal by a second year student who would be directly affected by the cancellation and asked not to be named.
She was stunned after learning that she would be unable to pursue her preferred subject, towards which she had dedicated two past years of study.
She said: "The university has devalued our area of interest and betrayed us as students. My intentions to study this subject were clearly set out even in my personal statement. Had I known that situations like this could occur, I highly doubt that Edinburgh University would have been my first choice."
A spokesperson for the univesrity refused to be drawn on the particulars of the case, but said:
"No student admitted to any undergraduate degree in Divinity will be prevented from completing the degree for which he/she was admitted."
