Music and theatre come crashing together in 2 Pianos 4 Hands by Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt, a semi-autobiographical show that explores the two men’s love/hate relationship with the piano. A co-production between King’s Theatre Edinburgh and Perth Theatre, this show, directed by Greenblatt, showcases the musical talent of the comedy double act, Katzenjammer, whilst appealing to anyone who’s ever wanted to succeed at anything. Comprised of various musical pieces from Bach’s ‘Concerto in D minor’ to ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’, 2 Pianos 4 Hands follows Richard (Steven Worbey) and Ted (Kevin Farrell) and their trials and triumphs in their as concert pianists.

Beginning with their first few lessons in the piano, and capturing various moments from their childhood and teenage years, the play reveals how a childhood passion can grow into an obsession. After becoming an off-Broadway hit in 1997, 2 Pianos 4 Hands has since been performed on five continents and in over 150 cities. But while a play about two men’s dedication to music may seem like a very niche subject, the magic of Greenblatt’s show is that its message of dedication and talent can be applied to any art form or sport; the  themes of practice and triumph in difficult circumstances have resonance whether one can play a musical instrument or not.

While the characters do come up against many obstacles in their quests to become world-famous classical pianists, the show manages to maintain a believable and welcome sense of unity and heart warming optimism through the sense of self-belief and confidence that runs throughout the piece. Inclusive, familiar and fun, 2 Pianos 4 Hands is a timeless classic that transcends the mediums of music and theatre to create a play that is unique as it is magical. One for anyone who’s ever wanted to be the best they could possibly be at something they feel passionate about - a night watching Katzenjammer’s physical comedy and listening to their musical prowess is a night well spent.
