In this column we have covered cocktails, wines, and other fancy tipples, but beer is always left out; sidelined thanks to its own over-commercialisation and association with grimy men in grimy bars in grimy towns. Beer will forever be the beverage of the student and the worker, but that does not mean the rest of us cannot enjoy it. The Brauhaus, named after the many brauhäuser or public houses which brew their own beer in Germany and Austria, raises the stakes of beer-drinking to a whole new level. I’ll be honest with you: the Brauhaus decor could really do with some Tyra Banks magic and air freshener. When someone leaves the door of the men’s room open, the smell of urine and cleaning fluid is unparalleled by anything else on the planet. There is not enough space on the busiest nights, and most of the time, it’s full of dudes. The Brauhaus is a man’s pub. Sorry chooks, but it’s true.
Fortunately, the Brauhaus is the least pretentious bar you will come across, and the pricing is reasonable considering the international provenance of most of the beers on offer.
The Brauhaus is a simple place, where people drink, talk, laugh and catch up, and not where you go to look your best. The Brauhaus is a place for friends and reconnection after a tough week. It's not bothered by the impression you’re trying to make.
It’s a place to try out some new beers from the United States, or Belgium, or New Zealand, or stick to the ones you already love. The staff are friendly and as knowledgeable as can be about all the brews they serve. No one minds what you order, as long as you’re ordering a good one, and at the Brauhaus, you probably are.
