Staff and students at the University of Edinburgh have begun the process of electing a new Rector of the University.

Nominations are now open and the new Rector will be appointed next year, replacing journalist and broadcaster Ian Macwhirter who became the 50th rector in 2009.

The traditional role of the Rector is to chair the University court, but in recent times they have become more involved in the community and work closely with EUSA. The university describe the Rector's role is described as, "akin to that of an ombudsperson for the university community."

The post has become prestigious thanks to the notoriety of some of its previous holders. Prime Ministers Gordon Brown, Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George and Stanley Baldwin once held the position as well as the discoverer of penicillin Sir Alexander Fleming, actor James Roberston Justice, journalist Muriel Gray, the singer Donnie Munro and the footballer John Colquhoun.

EUSA president Matt McPhersonsaid: "The relationship between staff and students shouldn't be limited to the lecture theatre. When we look at potential cuts to higher education funding, university governance, and the constant risk of course closures, we've got to recognise that the Rectorial election is a great opportunity for us to stand united as a student and staff movement, in recognition of what we can achieve together.

"We'll be working hard in the coming weeks to attract the interest of the nation's brightest minds and best people - the role of Rector is an important one, and we can't afford anyone less than that."

The election will be held online from 8-9 February 2012, and hopeful candidates must gather at least 40 signatures from university staff and students in support of their nomination.
