There were tense scenes at Surgeons' Hall in Edinburgh this afternoon, as protesters picketed a visit by UK health secretary Andrew Lansley to the Royal College of Surgeons.

Mr Lansley was due to deliver a keynote address as part of the programme events organised by RCS to celebrate the centenary of surgical pioneer Joseph Lister. But the health secretary was forced to play a cat-and-mouse game with around 60 activists, who laid siege to the hall to protest Mr Lansley's stewardship of the unpopular Health Reform Bill.
