The Children's Touring Partnership in association with the National Theatre presents the children’s tale of Swallows and Amazons. Based on the novel by Arthur Ransome, writer Helen Edmundson brings the magic to life. Supported by talented director Tom Morris (War Horse), with memorable music from Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy and a magnificent performance from an energetic cast, the production presents itself in the most brilliant of lights.
Arriving in the Lake District where the Walkers, aka the Swallows, are to spend their summer John (Richard Holt), Susan (Katie Moore), Titty (Akiya Henry) and Rodger (Stewart Wright) embark on the adventure of a lifetime. The story begins soon after their father grants them permission to stay on Wildcat Island, where they come into contact with their fears and vivid imaginations. The intrepid explorers set sail on their maiden voyage and shortly after setting up camp come face to face with their mortal enemies, the Amazons. A challenge is laid down, the gauntlet is accepted and the famous story is retold like never before.
Swallows and Amazons is a wonderful demonstration of innovative theatre irrevocably proving that in today's world there are still multi-talented performers finding their way on the circuit. There are very few productions that can use their actors as their orchestra and as the crew, who when not performing are manoeuvring props and adjusting the set to assist the fluid transition between scenes. The show's interactive and engaging nature provoked a childlike excitement from the audience. As a novel and as a musical play Swallows and Amazons reflects beautifully on the innocence of childhood. It's a masterpiece, a work of genius and a must see for all the family.
