James McAsh has been elected president of Edinburgh University Students’ Association, in a major victory for the anti-cuts movement at the leading Scots university.

McAsh defeated rivals Hugh Murdoch and James Wood in a close race, emerging the victor in the fourth round of voting, with 2,325 votes to Murdoch’s 2,134.

He is joined on the 2012/13 sabbatical team by vice-president (academic affairs) Andrew Burnie, vice-president (services) Max Crema and vice-president (societies & activities) Hazel Marzetti.
