University of Edinburgh 1st XI 2
University of Edinburgh 2nd XI 1
Edinburgh University women’s First team came through by a narrow margin to claim a narrow 2-1 victory over their reserve side on 14 November. Alex Messerli scored both goals for the winning team in a match where both sides demonstrated why they sit at the top of the league.
Possession of the ball was, for the most part, evenly divided and although the Firsts were the slightly stronger side the two teams were largely equal in their ability.
The first goal came after twenty minutes when the 1st XI's Alex Messerli powered the ball into the back of the net. The seconds now trailing didn’t equalise until after ten minutes of the second half and then they could not hold this equal score for long as the Firsts maintained strong pressure pulling back into the lead just seven minutes later. Strong defending from both sides ensured that this 2-1 score remained until the final whistle.
The firsts had more attempts at goal but failed to utilise two short corners and a penalty.
The goal from the seconds was notable although slightly less succinct than those from the firsts. After battle in the semi circle Bryony Lynn flicked the ball towards the goal unluckily hitting the post. She didn’t let the moment pass however as she blocked the ball on the rebound and managed to tap it into the goal.
Both teams applied constant pressure throughout the match. The Seconds had to make strong use of their defending players but a large part of the match was played more in the centre of the pitch rather than in either of the team’s halves. Sue Davidson, first team captain, and Rhana Stewart, also of the first team, showed particular strength in their play. This was an exciting and fast paced game in which the members of both teams displayed a large amount of skill.
