Shorn of his nauseatingly naughty ex-band mate Peter Doherty, Carl Barat's life outside The Libertines might not be quite as dramatic these days – but it seems to be infinitely more productive.

With his chiselled good looks and unceremonious demeanour, Carl has led his new group, Dirty Pretty Things to two album launches in as many years, charming old fans and new with his distinctive brand of indie rock.

Yet their most recent release, Romance At Short Notice staggered into the album charts in June this year, debuting at a disappointingly flaccid number 35. And all this despite Barat applying three failsafe rules to assist his song writing: “More books, less Deal Or No Deal and no drugs.” So just what exactly is a cult indie songsmith and guitar hero to do when he needs to sell an album or two? A tour seems the only answer.

In an effort to drum up new interest in their recent work and remind existing fans of just how accomplished their last album was, The Dirty Pretty Things are embarking on a gruelling UK wide tour. So, sandwiched somewhere between gigs at musical hot spots like Stockton and Hatfield, they’ll be descending on Edinburgh to play the newly refurbished Picture House.

The group’s reputation for live performance marks them out as a real highlight in what is a busy autumn schedule of musical mayhem in the city. If you fancy a night of wholesome indie shenanigans you’d do well to grab your pork pie hat, skinny jeans and make your way to their gig. Doubters should just keep reminding themselves that, while they might not be The Libertines, at the very least you’ll be afforded a full set of songs performed by a singer who has the ability to sing unimpaired and standing upright.
