The Journal is the only newspaper in the United Kingdom outside London to serve the student population of an entire city. We distribute to the campuses of:
Published every fortnight during term-time, The Journal is read by around 80,000 people an issue, in print and online, making us one of the largest publications of our kind in Scotland. We are also completely independent of any university of students' union; we work in partnership with the institutions we distribute to, but are funded entirely through advertising and so can claim complete editorial freedom.
Our goal is to provide the Edinburgh student community with the highest quality journalism possible, and to give our staff the best work experience they can get outside a mainstream commercial publication. Former members of The Journal's staff have been accepted into jobs and internships at:
Our alumni have also been accepted onto postgraduate journalism programmes at Napier University; City University, London; the University of Liverpool and Cardiff University. We've scooped over a dozen award nominations at industry, regional and national press awards. In 2009, we won Publication Design of the Year at the Guardian Student Media Awards, while Deputy Editor Simon Mundy picked up both Student Journalist of the Year and Best Features Writer at the Herald Student Press Awards. In 2010, The Journal won the award for Best Use of Multimedia at the Herald Student Press Awards.
Hundreds of people have taken this chance to develop their skills, open up new opportunities and serve their community with The Journal – so where will it take you?
